Changing the Color of Christmas Ornament Caps

Many times, when you purchase used or second hand ornaments the caps are rusted or otherwise damaged. Most often, these caps were made of aluminum and silver in color. Hanging on your tree, this may not matter as much because the eye is naturally directed to the shape or color of the ornament. But, what if your ornaments all have gold caps? If the color of the caps on your ornaments matters to your color scheme, you can change it. Take them off of your ornaments and spray paint them first.

Following are the steps that I took to change the color on the silver caps of old ornaments that I purchased.

Look around the house for a Styrofoam container, an old cardboard box or stiff piece of cardboard that you can use for mounting the ornament caps. Carefully remove the caps from the ornaments and stick them 'feet' first into the Styrofoam, box, etc. until the edge of the cap is flush with the surface. An example of hooks inserted into a cardboard box is below:

As you can see, all sides of the ornament cap will be visible. You can spray paint as many caps as you want without the necessity of holding each one and painting them one at a time. If you have a lot of caps to paint, placing them about 1" apart will put enough space between cap that you can spray paint on and cover all sides of the cap. If you just have a few, place them about two-three inches apart.

Use plastic gloves to protect your hands. Follow the manufacturers instructions on the can of your favorite spray paint. You can also hit them with a coat or two of clear spray paint. Let the newly painted caps dry at least 48 hours before a clear coat and thereafter before placing them back on the ornament.

When they are dry, reattach to the neck of the ornament with hot or a clear drying craft glue. I prefer to use hot glue. You can attach them permanently to your ornaments with a liquid glue that dries fast.

There are a couple of resources on the internet for buying replacement ornament caps if you want all of your caps to be brand new. For this you will need the measurements of the existing cap. Most of them will be metric not standard. A search at DuckDuckGo or Bing will turn up resources in the US and Germany.
